How to Hide the Smell of Weed

Hiding the Smell of Weed

Most modern strains of marijuana feature powerful, dank aromas, ranging from tropical fruit, to bubblegum, to lemon/citrus, to earthy/piney, all the way to cat piss, and whether the smell is pleasant or not (the overwhelming majority are quite pleasant in our opinion), their odors can be so pungent that they can be smelled by others who may not be cool with you smoking herb.

If you are in the position of wanting to smoke some loud without arousing suspicion from parents, roommates, your significant other, landlords, police, etc., do not fret, you have come to the right place! If you take a couple simple precautions, you can definitely get lifted without fear of getting in trouble.

First, and this is where many people fail in their quest to smoke inconspicuously, you have to smoke in moderation. If your goal is to hide the smell of a 2 gram blunt rolled in a grape Dutch Master, you will have no chance of keeping your secret safe. There is NO remedy for that amount of smoke other than time. You have to realize that you can still get high, even without blazing as much as Snoop Dogg. Instead of rolling up that blunt, pull out your one-hitter, or a small glass pipe and simply take one hit at a time. Space out the hits, maybe one every 10-20 minutes. Trust us, you will get high, but it’s much easier to mask odors when your hits are spaced out (this also helps you conserve weed too, so it’s smart and economical).

Second, if you don’t have access to a window to blow smoke out of, you’re going to have to try to mask any weed odors that will be floating around the room you're in. There is one method we have found to work above all others to physically mask the smell of ganja. Simply take a paper towel roll tube and stuff two or three scented dryer sheets into one end. Go the extra mile and wrap an additional two dryer sheets over the end of the tube, and secure them in place with a rubber band. You are now armed with the best DIY smoke smell eliminator known to man. Anytime you take a bowl swat, simply exhale your hit into the open end of the tube, and the smoke will go through the tube, pass through all of the dryer sheets, and come out fresh smelling on the other side.

Pro Tip: If your house/apartment has a bathroom with a ventilation fan, definitely make use of that. It’s job is to eliminate the rank odors that pop up when you go number two, so if it can handle that, it can definitely take care of a little weed odor.

How to Get Rid of the Smell of Weed

Now, say you have already smoked a couple bowls before reading this article! It’s too late to take any measures to hide the smell, you’re just going to have to try your best to eliminate it. There are really only a few ways you can go about doing this, and none of them are foolproof (though, if you do several of them in combination, you will give yourself a great chance):

  1. Use pleasantly scented air deodorizing sprays. You can buy these at your local supermarket. Spray several sprays in the room you were smoking in to start to cut into the thick smell of smoke.
  2. Open any/all windows.
  3. Lighting candles with matches. Not only will the candle offer a pleasant scent, but the smell of struck matches is actually surprisingly effective at masking odors.
  4. Turn on any ceiling or box fans that you own to circulate the stale air in the room.
  5. Vacuum. Not only does vacuuming help to eliminate odors, but sometimes the vacuum itself even emits a smell of its own while it’s running.

As someone who actively smoked in his parents’ home for years without them ever finding out, and who even smoked herb in the bathrooms on campus while in college without ever getting caught, I can say with confidence that if you smoke in moderation and take the steps laid out above, you, too, can smoke in peace and quiet without the paranoia and fear that comes with smoking in places where you shouldn’t be smoking.
